he meriting victor of the fabulous jury prize at Sundance this year, the first time at the helm from AV Rockwell is somewhat unique. It is a dual coming-of-age story that takes place in Harlem, New York, from 1994 to 2005. It follows a mother, firecracker Inez (a fiery Teyana Taylor), who is an impulsive ex-con who was recently released from Rikers Island prison at the beginning of the film, as well as a son, Terry (played by Aaron Kingsley Adetola as a six-year-old, Aven Courtney at 13 and Josiah Cross Whenever Inez reconnects by chance with Terry, he's a messed up small kid, currently half bit up by the child care framework. Inez's own memories of spending her childhood in the care system are triggered by his subdued assumption that abandonment is inevitable. She settles on a pivotal choice and grabs Terry, with little arrangement other than to show up for him, to make a permanent place to stay for him.

She succeeds despite all odds, forming a difficult domestic unit with Lucky (William Catlett). However, Terry and Inez aren't the only ones changing: the city around them, and specifically Harlem, is being reshaped into a space that no longer feels like home. Both the soundscape surrounding the frame, which transitions from the raucous bustle of a community to the harder, less welcoming clatter of construction work, and Eric Yue's deft, empathic camerawork capture this visually. It all comes together thanks to a fantastic score by Gary Gunn. Even though lush strings pay homage to Quincy Jones's film compositions, the orchestra's swell and sweep cannot prepare us for the emotional impact of the final act.
